My Story
Therapy wasn't on my radar at all during college at Oberlin. I graduated without any idea about what I would do. I moved to Alaska to explore the wilderness and find myself. Let's just say I found plenty of wilderness. I got a fortunate break in my twenties to do a fellowship with teens in Baltimore. I thought I would be most excited to advocate for kids at court, but I found the time spent just hanging out and shooting the breeze, the most alive and valuable. That experience opened up a world of social workers to me, which led me to Smith College School for Social Work. There, I realized that I could dedicate myself to the art of therapy, and that would give me tools to really hone in on what mattered and be maximally helpful to the people I talked to. At Smith, the wisest people I met were psychoanalysts, so I figured, if it worked for them, it might work for me. Psychoanalysis isn't just a field of study, its a way of living. During my training, I met people who were wise and funny and lived full lives, the kind of people you think, "I want to be like that!" So, I've kept following people who I thought were living meaningful lives, and that led me to private practice and teach at the institute that helped set my personal and professional compass.
